Generating and Consuming JSON Data
JSON (Java Script Online Notation) is a data exchange format like XML, however JSON is simpler, less verbose and can be faster parsed than XML. In this way JSON becomes more and more important especially when data is exchanged by RESTful web services. The use of XML declines in favor of JSON. With Release 7.3 TR 3 a bunch of scalar and aggregate functions were integrated into SQL, for generating JSON objects, arrays and for combining JSON components into complete documents. The JSON_TABLE tables function for consuming JSON data was already introduced with Release 7.3 TR 1. With the JSON_TABLE table function JSON documents can be parsed, converted into a relational representation and data picked specifically out. Additional scalar functions allow SQL to directly access JSON documents located within the IFS (Integrated File System) or in source physical file members. Last but not least IBM provides SQL http-functions for getting access to web services. In composition with the JSON_TABLE function the JSON answers returned by web services can be consumed within a SELECT-Statement.

Hands-on IBM i + Node-RED = succeed faster in programming
IBM i is a private cloud on its own, and when used with open source technology in conjunction with Db2 for i, you can perform great things quickly and bring innovation for your business. Node-RED, which is built on Node.js, is a browser-based flow editor that makes it easy to wire together devices, APIs, and online services by simply dragging and dropping nodes on a palette. You then connect, or wire, the nodes to create flows that can be then deployed to the lightweight Node.js runtime with a single click. Make your idea a reality by prototyping like a master using Node-RED, and Node.js in conjunction with IBM i! Get hands-on experience and learn how to use Watson services, make a chatbot, connect to your RPG programs, use NoSQL databases using node-RED. And you don ™t even need any programming experience!

iDoctor for IBM i Deep Dive
iDoctor is the best tool for doing deep dive performance investigations on IBMi. iDoctor gives you a good graphical understanding about your performance data. This can be when you are looking at Collection Services data and Job Watcher data, but also PEX (Performance Explore) data. Wait accounting will be reviewed, so you understand how IBM i can make it possible to collect performance data used for deep diving into partition and your applications. You will see practical examples of iDoctor analyzing Collection Service data, Job Watcher data and PEX data, so you can get very deep information about bottlenecks and issues in jobs/threads that can help you solve performance problems. Before the conference, you are welcome to contact the speaker at morten.buur.rasmussen@dk.ibm.com to request your own data to be analyzed during the session. Before the conference, you will be guided through the collection of data, so that is ready for the conference. Almost all types of performance problems can be analyzed via iDoctor.

RCAC - Row and Column Access Control - Secure your Data!
Data is the new Currency, is the essence of an article written by Neil Tardy based on an interview with Mike Cain (database consultant with IBM Lab Services). Since data is so important, it must be protected from unauthorized access and prevented from being stolen. With traditional methods and additional programming, data access could be restricted, but also circumvented! RCAC is an additional layer that is directly linked with the database tables. Users must be explicitly authorized for accessing either all or only a sub-set of the data. If a user is not authorized for any data, he will not get access to the data not even if his user profile has *ALLOBJ authority and independent which interface (SQL, native I/O, UPDDTA etc.) is used.

Storwize advanced topics
For the average IBM i shop storage has been just that storage. The primary differences between Internal disk and SAN disk for years was the complexity of connection and the price of the solution. Until not long ago questions such as What else can it do? were left unasked because the cost and complexity answers often put SAN storage out of reach.Changes to the cost and complexity equation have placed SANs within reach of most if not all IBM i customers. So if we ™ve got a SAN what can it do besides be storage? Glad you asked!SANs bring to us the ability to make a combinations of storage types appear as one. They have the ability built in to move data between tiers of disk from the slowest of the spinning rust to the fastest of the Solid state storage based on frequency of access and you, the admin, doesn ™t need to waste a moment doing it. SANs can encrypt your data at rest with no overhead to IBM i.SANs can create a copy of 20TB of data in just seconds, really! OK Not really but it looks like it did so effectively it did. That copy can now be used to perform a backup or to run reports at a point in time or as a training environment or a test environment. When you ™re done with it it goes away as fast as it was created, in a flash.SANs can replicate date near or far for use in disaster recovery or high availability environments.Higher end SANs can even front end other storage presenting that to IBM i or migrating data from one SAN to another. In this session we ™ll show how to make each of the above work and how each of these can be useful in your shop.Learning objectives:Understand how to encrypt data at rest.Understand how to set up easy tier to enable data movement betweenstorage tiers.Understand how to build, trigger, and reset a Flash copy.Understand how to build a replicated data set between Storwize SANsUnderstand how to use the command line on StorwizeUnderstand how to communicate and control a Storwize SAN from IBM i

Using FalconStor VTL as a Backup Target for IBM i
For too long, the standard method of backing up IBM i systems has been with a locally attached tape drive or library. The result is reduced performance due to limited backup streams, excessive manual tape handling, and no way to secure data offsite. By introducing the FalconStor® Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solution into an IBM i environment, organizations can non-disruptively replace tape backup in a disk-to-disk (D2D) format to accelerate backup/recovery processes and improve operational efficiency. FalconStor VTL provides integration with native backup tools, IPL bare-metal recovery from virtual or physical tape, and direct physical tape support with encryption to maximize secure operations. This reduces operational and media costs while increasing performance levels to meet stringent application recovery service level agreements (SLAs) and to maximize return on investment (ROI).

Create or Replace DDS Files with DDL Objects - IN GERMAN!
With the latest releases and technology refreshes the SQL data definition language (DDL) for creating and maintaining database objects was enormously enhanced. DDS on the other hand is stabilized. But still a lot of applications even those with a modern graphical interface and where the latest goodies of the programming language are used in the source code are based on DDS described files. The excuse DDL enhancements cannot be used, because of the DDS description and the native I/O access of these files, does not count any more. With Reverse Engineering, the SQL code for DDS described objects can be retrieved. CREATE OR REPLACE statements allow DDS described files to be converted into SQL defined database objects, while the programs that use these files can stay untouched. With the CREATE OR REPLACE TABLE statement, files with fields based on field reference tables can be managed.

IBM i in the Age of Approximate Computing
No one will argue that computing, across hardware and software, has evolved over the past 30 years to allow us to do things about which our grandparents never dreamed. Would they have guessed that all that computational power, combined with unfathomable volumes of data, would be used to get less accurate answers? That is the strength and beauty of the cognitive era, as computing works like our brains not giving the right answer, but to deliver the best answer. IBM i, with its integrated database, linkages to the latest programming languages, and connections to the very latest cognitive applications is just as relevant in the era of approximate computing as it was at its inception.

Using Machine Learning and Data Science Libraries
One of the hottest topics in computing today is machine learning, or creating an 'artificial intelligence' to help analyze and categorize your data. Many businesses are inundated with large amounts of data, but don't know how to leverage it to draw new insights. In this session we cover how to set up open-source machine-learning software on your IBM i, either through Python packages that enable machine learning or offloading data and then run through a few examples on simulated data. These examples will be used to show how creating models to draw inferences on your data can lead to real benefits for your business's bottom line.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn what options are available for machine learning on the IBM i.
2. Understand what machine learning is, and most importantly what it is not
3. Understand a basic example presented, and start to brainstorm about how inferencing might help their business.

Let's Join Together - Joining SQL Tables and Views
Accessing data with SQL becomes more and more important. For resolving a single request data located in multiple tables must be filtered, accumulated and/or merged together. In this way we need to focus our attention on consolidating data split over multiple tables. SQL provides different methods for joining tables and views together, such as inner, outer, exception, cross and full join. A table or view even can be joined with itself or with the result of a different select statement. The result returned from multiple select statements can be merged and even accumulated in a single SQL statement.

M81: A full clone of your Production in 2 minutes for your backups or tests or recovery!
Embedded with external storage from IBM (SVC, Storwize Vxxxx, FS9xxx, DS8xxx) or from other manufacturers there is a very powerful function: FLASHCOPY (or SNAPSHOT or INSTANT COPY). This function allows you to CLONE all the disks of a full partition in some seconds!!!

But how to use it from IBM i? Is it possible to launch a New Partition on the Cloned disks? For which usages?
- simply to execute hot backups (with or without BRMS) and even daily system backups (Save 21) ?...
- but also to create fresh environments for validation, test, acceptance, formation even for development ?...
- or to make copies that will be used as 'recovery' or as reference for analysis or for extractions toward a data warehouse or for simple SQL queries ? ...

The M81 product - "Flash for i" - allows you, from your Production partition, to automate, manage, integrate and log all the necessary tasks for those kinds of usages … Example: execute a Daily SAVE21 backup in less than 2 minutes downtime!

HA Lösungen in der Praxis
english version scroll down**Hochverfügbarkeit in der täglichen Praxis IBM i
English: High availability in daily practice IBM i high availability solutions are offered today as pure hardware or software solutions. In the lecture we would like to show you the most common control options so that you can always rely on the availability of your IT. These can control the HA solution and also initiate actions such as a role swap in a controlled manner according to dependencies.
